In today’s edition of Monday Musings, we’ve got items on three different Ohio State teams.

Some good, some bad and some somewhere in between…

TL;DR

  • The transfer portal yields new Buckeyes

  • Ohio State women’s basketball gets big win

  • Ohio State men’s basketball gets roadtrip split

Three Thoughts from the Weekend

Transfer portal yields some gains for Ohio State (finally)

Just when it seemed like Ohio State might not have enough players to field a football team this fall (just kidding, but that was the impression you might have gotten if you read the wrong message board thread or Twitter posts), the Buckeyes snagged a pair of likely starters for the secondary.

Early Little Jr., a safety from Florida State, jumped on board Sunday. He was a second-team All-ACC safety last season and could be a poor man’s Caleb Downs for the Buckeyes, who lost the real Caleb Downs to the NFL draft.

Terry Moore, a safety from Duke, announced his pledge this morning.

He missed 2025 because of a knee injury suffered in the Blue Devils’ bowl game, but he was a second-team All-ACC performer in 2024.

This gives Ohio State seven incoming transfers (so far) if you insist on counting the long snapper for some reason.

THE UPSHOT

While the transfer portal trade deficit is still quite high, these additions do a couple things.

They provide likely new starters and explain some of the exodus from the secondary, where three starting spots are open and a handful of talented freshmen and sophomores who could have grabbed them went to the portal instead.

Little and Moore join WR Devin McCuin (UTSA), LB Christian Alliegro (Wisconsin) and DT John Walker (Central Florida) as potential starters from the portal.

Ohio tight end Mason Williams figures to be in line for lots of playing time, but we still don't know if Max Klare is coming back or going pro.

Ohio State WBB gets road ranked win

Jaloni Cambridge scored 28 points while her sister Kennedy added 18 as 19th-ranked Ohio State went to Maryland and beat the eighth-ranked Terrapins 89-76 on Sunday afternoon.

Kylee Kitts added 18 points while Chance Gray pitched in 11 for coach Kevin McGuff’s team, which improved to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes trailed 24-12 after one quarter, but they cut the lead to two points by halftime then outscored the hosts 49-34 in the second half.

They shot 50% from the floor while holding the Terrapins to 41.2% and forced 17 turnovers.

Jaloni Cambridge, Ohio State’s standout sophomore point guard, was named the Naismith Player of the Week after dropping 41 points on Illinois on Wednesday. She is third in the league in scoring (21.2 points per game) and steals (2.4).

THE UPSHOT

Ohio State has won four in a row since losing to No. 4 UCLA on Dec. 28.

At 5-1 in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes are half a game out of first place, but it is crowded near the top. UCLA and Iowa are 5-0 in league play while OSU shares third place with Michigan and Michigan State.

This is another guard-dominated team for McGuff, who has produced some great backcourts in his time in Columbus. Size could be an issue down the stretch, but they will get plenty of chances to prove themselves.

They go to Iowa on Jan. 25, host Maryland on Feb. 15 and Michigan on Feb. 25 before finishing the regular season at MSU (March 1).

One step forward, one step back for OSU MBB

Right after the women’s triumph ended in the east, their male counterparts took the floor at Washington.

The Buckeyes beat Oregon 72-62 on Thursday night but coughed up a seven-point second half lead to the Huskies.

As usual, Bruce Thornton was great for the Buckeyes. The senior point guard had 28 points on 9-for-17 shooting. Freshman forward Amare Bynum added 20 points, and junior Devin Royal added 11 points and eight rebounds, but the bench contributed just about nothing.

THE UPSHOT

Jake Diebler’s team needed a split at worst on its two-game trip to the Pacific Northwest.

It got that, but the loss to Washington dropped Ohio State back to ninth place in the grossly oversized Big Ten.

On the bright side, that is much farther from last place than it used to be when there were only 10 teams in the league (as God intended).

On the other hand, there is not much indication they are going to finish much over .500 in the league.
