The Ohio State basketball teams both really needed wins Sunday, and they both got wins Sunday.
What a turnaround from a disappointing Wednesday night in which the Buckeye men got blown out at Iowa and the women lost a wild game at home to Michigan.
TL;DR
Ohio State men play best game of season against Purdue
Buckeyes women bomb Michigan State to close regular season
Big Ten Tournament on tap for OSUWBB
Thoughts from the Weekend
Was that the real Ohio State men’s basketball team?
I doubt it, but I suppose you never know.
After 29 games, you typically are what you are, and Jake Diebler’s team has been inconsistent. However, I do think that is what it’s supposed to look like when everything is going well.
The Buckeyes are shooting 34.9% from 3-point range in Big Ten play.
If they shot that percentage for the season, they would be leading the conference by .1 over Purdue and Nebraska, so that shows you what a fine line teams can walk.
In Bruce Thornton, they have one of the league’s best players.
Freshman Amare Bynum is very talented but young, and Devin Royal has the potential to be a force when it’s clicking (a.k.a. he’s making shots).
The wild card is John Mobley Jr., who missed three games with a finger injury and previously struggled in losses to Illinois and Wisconsin.
If he isn’t making shots, they are better off without him on the floor, but when he is on, the Buckeyes are dangerous.
Guess what? Mobley had 21 points against Purdue. He made five 3-pointers and they won.
They still don’t have much size or strength, but they at least have enough offensive firepower to beat teams if they really scratch and claw on the defensive end.
In a perfect world, they will do that every night, right?
Apparently not.
Diebler has been harping on that all season, enough that it seemed like he was screaming into the void.
They do seem to be more into it defensively the last few games, though, so maybe he’s getting through now.
Or maybe Purdue just missed too many 3s.
Power forward Trey Kaufman-Renn had his way inside for the Boilermakers, but they really struggled to find the range from beyond the arc in the second half.
For what it’s worth, Painter went into great detail after the game about his frustration with his team’s inconsistency on defense — and they entered the game ranked No. 8.
THE UPSHOT
These days in basketball momentum is much like baseball except for instead of tomorrow’s starting pitcher, it’s your next five 3-point shots.
Make a majority, and you’ll probably be in good shape.
Miss most of them? You’re probably in trouble.
I am not so much a fan of that, but nobody asked for my vote when this was decided.
The win moved Ohio State from the first four out all the way to a 10 seed in CBS Sports bracketology, but they can’t afford to lose at woeful Penn State on Wednesday.
Beating Indiana in the home finale seems like a pretty good idea, too, especially since the Hoosiers are another bubble team.

Speaking of Thornton, did you see what Purdue coach Matt Painter said about him after the game Sunday?

Was that the real Ohio State women’s basketball team?
Kevin McGuff’s squad has no concern about making the NCAA Tournament, but the Buckeyes are clinging to hopes of hosting in the first and second rounds.
They were the No. 16 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament projections released by the selection committee Sunday before they blitzed Michigan State, who was No. 14.
That’s a big deal because the top 16 get to host.
Ohio State made a program-record 18 three-pointers in East Lansing and won 87-68.
They finished tied for fourth in the final Big Ten standings but are the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament because of a 74-61 loss to the Golden Gophers two weeks ago.
That was part of a stretch that saw Ohio State lose three of four games, so finishing on a high note against the Spartans seems like no small thing.
THE UPSHOT
The Big Ten women’s basketball tournament starts Wednesday with three games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and I will be there to see it live!
Ohio State will face either No. 12 seed Nebraska or No. 13 Indiana at around 2:30 on Thursday afternoon.
If the Buckeyes win, they will get a rematch with the Golden Gophers on Friday afternoon.
Next for the winner of that game likely will be No. 1 seed UCLA on Saturday afternoon, and the championship game is set for Sunday afternoon.
